Rwanda is a small, hilly, landlocked country just south of the equator. Most of it lies above 1,000 metres, which keeps the climate mild all year. Kigali, the capital, is easy to get around, and plastic bags have been banned nationwide since 2008. Lake Kivu runs along the western border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Volcanoes National Park, in the Virunga mountains of the northwest, is the main place for mountain gorilla and golden monkey trekking. Nyungwe National Park in the southwest is an old rainforest with chimpanzees and a canopy walkway. Akagera National Park in the east is savannah, and since lions and rhinos were brought back it holds the Big Five again.
Rwanda works well for a short trip. Volcanoes National Park is about two and a half hours by road from Kigali, so you can see gorillas with only two or three nights in the country. Gorilla permits cost more than in Uganda, and the number issued each day is limited.
Rwanda has no coast, so Zanzibar is the beach to pair with it. Flights from Kigali reach Zanzibar in one day. Keep in mind that Rwanda is one hour behind Tanzania and Kenya.

Visa & Entry Requirements
Official entry rules for international travelers
Visitors of all nationalities can get a visa on arrival or apply online in advance through the official Irembo portal. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie member states receive a 30-day visa free of charge; most others pay USD 50 for a single entry.
The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya for 90 days but not Tanzania. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. Gorilla permits are booked separately through the Rwanda Development Board.
Travel insurance is not mandatory in Rwanda, but we recommend it. Checked on 16 October 2026.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages.
Border officers require proof of your return or onward flight and safari lodge booking confirmations.
A yellow fever certificate is mandatory if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk or an active outbreak, and the vaccine must be given at least 10 days before travel.
Without one you are vaccinated on entry at your own cost. Rwanda is not on Tanzania's list, so you do not need a certificate to fly on to Zanzibar, unless you spent 12 hours or more in transit in a listed country such as Kenya or Uganda.
Malaria is present, with a lower risk in Kigali and the higher areas, so ask a travel clinic about tablets. Drink bottled or filtered water. Gorilla treks have health rules of their own: you may be turned away if you have a cold or other illness on the day.
