Jambiani Beach

Jambiani is the beach that Paje used to be before the kite schools arrived. It's a working fishing and seaweed-farming village where accommodation lines the sand and the rhythm of the day follows the tide, not the tourist schedule. Women carry seaweed baskets on their heads in the mornings. Children play football at low tide on the exposed flats. Fishermen sort nets beside their boats. It's not a performance of local life for visitors; it's what the village does. Travellers who want authentic east-coast Zanzibar without the international beach-party atmosphere tend to land here and stay longer than they planned.

The beach runs roughly three kilometres of wide white sand. At high tide it fills with clear, shallow turquoise water and the whole thing becomes the east-coast lagoon at its best. At low tide the sea retreats and exposes wide tidal flats where local women farm seaweed in neat rows. Walking out at low tide to watch the farmers work is worth an hour of any morning; it's a practice that's been unchanged for generations and it's good to see. Plan your swimming around high tide. Most guesthouses post the tide table.

Accommodation is some of the best value in Zanzibar. Family-run guesthouses sit directly on the sand at prices that genuinely don't add up compared to what you'd pay at Nungwi. Food at local restaurants is cheap and genuinely made from scratch: fresh fish, pilau rice, coconut curries, grilled octopus, mkate wa ufuta (sesame bread). A few mid-range boutique guesthouses have opened recently, but Jambiani hasn't tipped into the upscale category and seems unlikely to quickly.

The Kuza Cave, about ten minutes from the beach, is a freshwater cave spring where you can swim underground in cool, clear water. It's run by the local community and makes a good morning trip. From Jambiani you can reach Jozani Forest, Paje's kite scene and The Rock Restaurant in under thirty minutes. Stone Town is about an hour and fifteen minutes by road.
