About Mnemba Atoll & Destination Guide
Mnemba Atoll is the best-known snorkelling and diving area in Zanzibar and a popular place for dolphin trips. It suits snorkellers, divers and families. Mnemba Island itself is private, and you reach the surrounding reef by boat.
Trips usually leave from Matemwe or Nungwi. Time matters. From 8am to 10am many boats crowd around looking for dolphins. You still see them, but it is less fun. We aim to be there by 10am, as the others are coming out of the water. Dolphins can be seen until about noon.
In our guides' experience, dolphin sightings at Mnemba are far more reliable than at Kizimkazi. No wild animal is guaranteed.
We book the boat, the guide and the snorkel gear, and we plan the transfer to the departure beach.
Getting Here, Transport & Climate
Trips leave by boat from Matemwe or Nungwi. We arrange the transfer from your hotel or the airport. From Nungwi the boat ride takes about 45 minutes; from Matemwe it is shorter (about 20 to 30 minutes). The drive from the airport takes about 1 hour to Matemwe and about 1 hour 15 minutes to Nungwi.
Overland travel in customized Toyota Land Cruisers featuring pop-up roofs for 360° wildlife viewing, USB charging sockets, high-clearance suspension, and a cooler with chilled bottled water.
