Stone Town is where you understand what Zanzibar actually is. The island's position in the Indian Ocean made it the central hub of East African spice and slave trade for centuries. Omani Arabs, Indian merchants, Persian traders, Portuguese sailors and British colonial administrators all left physical marks within a few hundred metres of each other. The result is a city where a Sunni mosque, a Hindu temple and a Catholic cathedral share the same street, and where the architecture is unlike anything else in Africa.
This three-day tour goes deeper than any day trip can. Your guide grew up in Stone Town and can take you into spaces that don't appear on the standard walking-tour map: an active brass workshop where artisans still carve the iconic Zanzibar doors by hand, private courtyards in historical family homes, the archaeological interior of the Hamamni Persian Baths. Day two is a full walking tour of the main monuments: the Old Arab Fort (1699), House of Wonders, the Anglican Cathedral and slave market memorial, the Palace Museum of the Sultans. Lunch at a local restaurant off the tourist circuit.
The Prison Island sunrise on day three is what most visitors remember longest. You take a boat at 5:30am and arrive on Changuu Island before any day-trippers. The giant Aldabra tortoises, some over a century old, move slowly through the morning light. By 8am, when the cruise-ship excursions start arriving, you're back having breakfast in Stone Town. The difference between seeing Prison Island at 6am and at 10am is significant, and once you've done it at sunrise you understand why.
Three days works well either as a standalone city break or as an opening or closing extension to a longer beach or safari package. Stone Town is fifteen minutes from the airport, so there's no dead travel time at the start or end of the trip.
